Connecting Your Own Domain to Your Website
Step by step connect your own domain to your Webey website with DNS and SSL.
A custom domain name gives your website a professional look and is essential for brand recognition. Instead of a long subdomain, you use your own company name, which builds trust with visitors and is better for your branding.
Registering a Domain
Register a domain with a reliable registrar like GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare, or Google Domains. Costs are typically 10 to 20 dollars per year for a .com domain. Choose a short, memorable name that fits your brand. Check in advance whether the domain name is not registered as a trademark to avoid legal issues.
Tips for Domain Choice
Keep your domain name short and simple — a maximum of two or three words. Avoid hyphens and numbers because these are hard to remember and pronounce. Choose a country-specific extension if you primarily target a local market, or a .com if you are internationally active. Also check if the name is available on social media so you can use the same brand name everywhere.
Setting Up DNS Step by Step
After registration, you need to adjust the DNS settings to point your domain to your Webey site. Go to the DNS management at your registrar and add a CNAME record. Fill in the hostname field with www and the target field with the address you find in your Webey site settings under Domain. For the root domain (without www), add an A record with the IP address Webey provides you. The changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate worldwide, but usually it's active within an hour.
SSL Certificate
Webey automatically arranges an SSL certificate for your domain once the DNS settings are correctly configured. This ensures your website is accessible via HTTPS, which is essential for three reasons: it encrypts communication so visitor data is protected, it's a ranking factor for Google, and browsers show a warning on sites without HTTPS. You don't need to do anything for this — Webey handles it completely.
Setting Up Redirects
Make sure both the www and non-www versions of your domain work. Choose a preferred version (with or without www) and set up a redirect from the other version. This prevents duplicate content and ensures all link equity goes to a single domain. In most cases, Webey handles this automatically for you.
Email Address with Your Domain
With your own domain, you can also create professional email addresses like info@yourcompany.com. You can do this through your registrar or through an email provider like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. Add the necessary MX records to your DNS settings to make email work.
Troubleshooting
If your domain still doesn't work after 24 hours, check whether the DNS records are correctly set up. Use a tool like dig or an online DNS checker to verify that your records are correctly configured. Common errors include an incorrect CNAME target, a missing dot at the end of the CNAME target with some registrars, or conflicting records. Contact your registrar's or Webey's support if you have problems.
Transferring a Domain
If you already have a domain at another registrar, you can transfer it or simply adjust the DNS settings without transferring. Adjusting DNS is the fastest option — you only change the records to point to your Webey site. Transferring can be convenient if you want to centralize all your domains at one provider.
