Connecting Google Search Console to Your Webey Site
Learn how to connect Google Search Console to your Webey site and how to use performance reports and fix indexing issues.
Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool from Google that lets you see how your website performs in search results. You can see which keywords generate traffic, how often your pages are displayed, and whether there are technical issues affecting your findability. In this article, we explain how to connect GSC to your Webey site and how to make the most of the available reports.
What Is Google Search Console?
Google Search Console is a free service from Google that helps website owners understand how Google sees their site. With GSC, you can:
- See which search queries bring visitors to your site.
- Check whether Google has correctly indexed all your pages.
- Identify technical issues that negatively affect your ranking.
- Submit your sitemap so Google discovers new pages faster.
- Check the mobile usability of your site.
Creating a GSC Account
If you don't have a Google Search Console account yet, here's how to create one:
- Go to search.google.com/search-console.
- Log in with your Google account (the same account you may also use for Google Analytics).
- Click Add Property.
- Choose the URL prefix type and enter the full URL of your site, for example https://www.yourbusiness.com or https://yoursite.webey.app.
- Click Continue.
Verifying Your Site
Google needs to verify that you are actually the owner of the site. There are two methods that work well with Webey:
Method 1: DNS TXT Record (Recommended)
This is the most reliable method, especially if you use a custom domain:
- Google shows you a TXT record that you need to add to your DNS settings.
- Log in to your domain registrar (for example, GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Cloudflare).
- Add a new TXT record to your domain with the value Google provides (usually starting with google-site-verification=...).
- Save the change and wait 5 to 30 minutes for the DNS change to propagate.
- Go back to Google Search Console and click Verify.
Method 2: HTML Tag
If you don't have access to your DNS settings, you can also verify via an HTML meta tag:
- Google gives you a meta tag in the format <meta name="google-site-verification" content="...">.
- In Webey, you can add this tag via Settings > SEO > Verification Tags.
- Paste the full meta tag and save.
- Go back to GSC and click Verify.
Submitting Your Sitemap
After verification, it's important to submit your sitemap. A sitemap tells Google which pages your site contains and when they were last updated. Webey automatically generates a sitemap. Here's how to submit it:
- In GSC, go to Sitemaps in the left menu.
- Enter your sitemap URL: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
- Click Submit.
- GSC shows the status of your sitemap. After some time, you'll see how many pages have been discovered and indexed.
You only need to submit the sitemap once. Webey automatically updates the sitemap when you add or remove pages, and Google checks the sitemap regularly for changes.
Understanding Performance Reports
The Performance report is the heart of Google Search Console. Here you see how your site performs in search results. The four key metrics are:
- Impressions: how often your pages were displayed in search results. An impression is counted whenever your link appears on screen, even if the user doesn't click on it.
- Clicks: how often someone actually clicked on your search result to visit your site.
- CTR (Click-Through Rate): the percentage of impressions that result in a click. A CTR of 5% means 5 out of 100 people who see your result click on it. A higher CTR indicates attractive titles and descriptions.
- Average Position: the average place where your page appears in search results. Position 1 is at the top, position 10 is at the bottom of the first page.
You can filter the reports by date range, specific pages, queries, countries, and devices. This helps you understand which pages perform well and where improvement is possible.
Using the URL Inspection Tool
With the URL Inspection tool, you check the indexing status of a specific page:
- Enter the page URL in the search bar at the top of GSC.
- GSC shows whether the page is indexed, when it was last crawled, and whether any issues were found.
- If a page isn't indexed yet, you can click Request Indexing to ask Google to crawl the page.
- This is useful when you've published a new page and want Google to include it in search results quickly.
Fixing Coverage Issues
The Pages report (formerly Coverage) shows which pages have been successfully indexed and which have issues. Common problems include:
- Page is not indexed — discovered but not indexed: Google found the page but decided not to index it (yet). This can happen because the content is too thin or too similar to other pages.
- Blocked by robots.txt: the page is blocked by your robots.txt. Check whether this is intentional.
- Redirect: the page redirects to another URL. This is normal if you've moved a page.
- Soft 404: the page exists but gives an error-like impression. Make sure empty pages actually return a 404 status code.
Mobile Usability Report
The Mobile Usability report shows whether your pages meet Google's requirements for mobile display. Since Webey is responsive by default, you should see few issues here. Possible warnings include:
- Text too small to read — check if you're using custom CSS with font sizes that are too small.
- Clickable elements too close together — ensure sufficient space between links and buttons.
- Content wider than screen — check for elements causing horizontal scrolling.
Linking GSC with Google Analytics
You can link Google Search Console to your Google Analytics account for a more complete picture of your website traffic:
- Open Google Analytics and go to Admin > Product Links > Search Console Links.
- Click Link and select your GSC property.
- After linking, you'll see Search Console data directly in your Analytics reports, allowing you to analyze search traffic and website behavior in one dashboard.
Tips for Regular Monitoring
Make it a habit to check GSC regularly:
- Weekly: review the performance overview and check for new error messages.
- Monthly: analyze which keywords generate the most traffic and whether new keywords are appearing.
- After changes: after publishing new pages or making major changes, check whether Google indexes them correctly.
- Set up email alerts: GSC automatically sends notifications for critical issues. Make sure these emails arrive in your inbox and don't end up in your spam folder.
